MEEKER I Debbie Hughbanks of Loon Lake, Wash., won the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials art contest for a second time. Hughbanks was unable to attend the art reception but MCSCT art contest director Mary Francis and MCSCT director Maym Cunningham displayed her piece “Taking Control” in her absence.
“The goal of the art show is to find the poster for the following year and to create a high quality art show and auction for the trials,” Coryell said.
Hughbanks also had the winning poster in 2010.
A special tribute was paid to local artists Shirlee Coy and Johnny Wix. Both passed away this past year and both were former participants of the art show. Coy actually won the contest in 1996 and the Best of Northwest Colorado award was presented to Jim Dawson in Coy’s name, for his piece titled “Lovin’ the Job.”
Dawson, of Crawford, Colo., was the winner of the 2011 MCSCT art contest and his art was used for the 2012 poster.
Runner-up honors went to Pat Burns of Forsyth, Ga., for the piece titled “Eye Contact,” and the people’s choice award went to Donna Cox of Morrison, Colo., for her piece “Hard to Handle.”
Cox has won the people’s choice award an unprecedented four times.
The application process is now available online for the 2013 contest at www.meekersheepdog.com/artwork.htm. Check the website for updated details or visit them on Facebook for entry guidelines and deadlines.
The 2012 MCSCT art show pieces are posted in a slideshow on its website.
