MEEKER I Only one day and 18 holes were played to determine the men and women golf club champions in Meeker last Saturday, instead of the normal two-day, 36-hole format played in the past.
“We wanted to get more players in, and it’s hard for some to play two days in a row, so we went to one day,” J.C. Watt said. The idea did draw more, as 22 played Saturday last, nine more than the year before.
Watt the defending men’s club champion won again this year beating Pat Hughes by one stroke.
“I wasn’t playing in his group so I didn’t know his score but knew it would be close,” Watt said of the competition.
Watt shot a five-over par 73 and Bill de Vergie finished third with a gross score of 76. ?? Lawson finished with the best net score of 61. Billy Stewart shot a gross score of 81 and took second place net honors with a net score of 62. Harry Watt finished one shot behind Stewart’s gross score and a net score of 64, for third place.
Patti Terp won the Meeker Women’s Club championship, shooting an 86, four shots better than Susie Sprod, who finished with the second best score in the field of eight players. Janet Henderson finished with the best net score (66) five ahead of Peggy Back.
The Meeker Couples tournament will be played this Saturday and Sunday at the Meeker Golf Course.
