The field of players in the annual Meeker Men’s Club tournament was not very deep but the competition for the title and a year of bragging rights as the men’s club champ was stiff.Thirteen members of the Meeker Men’s Club started the two-day, 36-hole tournament. Twelve of them finished a new champion was crowned.Defending champion Matt Fellows played the first 18 holes but came up lame in the back and withdrew from the tournament, leaving the door open for a new club champion. Former Meeker Men’s Club champ Pat Hughes finished the first round with a 3-over-par 71, two shots ahead of J.C. Watt, also a former champ.Hughes and Watt were joined by Norbert Boes and Pat Walsh for the final round, who witnessed a great match between the two former champions.“It went back and forth all day,” Watt said.Watt took a one shot lead with two holes to play when Hughes hit his tee shot out of bounds on the 17th hole. Watt made par on the 17th and Hughes recorded a double bogey, giving Watt a three shot lead and securing the title with one hole to play. Hughes parred the final hole and Watt recorded a bogey and a total gross score of 144, to win the title by two shots.“J.C. had a nice back side to win it,” local golf pro Jim Cook said when announcing the new champion.Ted Stewart played two good rounds of golf and won the net side of the tournament with a net score of 124, two shots ahead of Harry Watt. Both Stewart and the elder Watt shot a gross score of 164.
