Weather challenges Meeker at Glenwood

MEEKER — The Meeker Cowboy track team traveled to Glenwood Springs last Saturday to compete in the Demon Invitational.
The weather was as much of a challenge as the competition. It caused equipment failure and officials and athletes were all cold and wet. The meet went on, and the tough mountain folks kept battling.
Marki Cook and Kathryn Doll both qualified for finals in a field of more than 45 athletes, Marki brought home the gold and Kathryn placed fourth in the event finals. Adia Comeau ran a strong 400 and freshman Annie Cook came in 15th in the 800.
Krystal Olson ran the 1,600 and the 3,200 in the cold and wet on her birthday. One hundred-meter hurdlers Timbre Shriver and Mandi Cornelius placed eighth and 16th; both also had good showings in the 300-meter hurdles.
The 4×100 relay team of Marki Cook, Timbre Shriver, Janae Kindall and Kathryn Doll placed second behind Glenwood Springs.
Adrienne Wix, Annie Cook, Mandi Cornelius and Adia Comeau placed seventh in the 4×400 relay and the sprint medley team of Cornelius, Gabie Goettel, Wix and Comeau took eighth place.
Meg Nieslanik jumped all three jumps receiving ninth in the high jump, 10th in the long jump, and 13th in the triple jump.
Gabie Goettel tied for 11th in the high jump.
Freshman Kathryn Doll took the gold medal in the long jump on her final effort, going 15’7”. Janae Kindall was ninth in the long jump and threw the discus for the first time. Freshmen teammates Kathryn Doll placed second in the triple jump and Adrienne Wix was 11th overall. Chanler May came in 12th in the shot put and 16th in a field of 40 in the discus. The girls team placed fifth place out of 18 schools.
The guy’s team had some great efforts as well with freshman Toby Casias having the 10th fastest time out of more than 50 sprinters in the 100-meter dash. He topped that effort with a sixth place in the 200-meter dash running 24.35.
Sophomore Jarod Frantz ran a great 400 coming in 11th and the duo of Brock Campbell and Terrence Casias took third and fifth respectively in the 800-meter run.
Charlie Adams ran his very first track event in the 300 hurdles and beat half the field.
Toby Casias, Brock Campbell, Caleb Ball and Bubba Mazzola took seventh in the 4×100 meter relay and Brian Crowe, Chris Ruckman, Campbell and Pat Love came in eighth in the 4×200 meter relay.
Frantz, Toby Casias, Campbell and Terrence Casias placed fifth in the 4×400 relay.
In the field events Chris Ruckman tied for eighth in the high jump, Terrence Casias long jumped 17-10 in his first effort at that event.
Jake Nieslanik triple jumped more than 38-4 to place sixth.
The Meeker shot put trio of Johnny Wix, Bubba Mazzola and Jarrett Waldref threw in the cold drizzle, but managed some good distances. Johnny took the gold with a 46-6 with Mazzola ranking 10th and Waldref 16th in a field of more than 50.
Johnny made finals in the discus placing seventh and brother Ryan came in 12th. Caleb Ball placed in the top 15 as well. The guys came in seventh place out of 18 teams.
The Meeker thinclads will compete in the Hayden Invitational on Thursday and will host the Lynn Whiteman Invitational on Saturday.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
