MEEKER I More than a dozen residents and business owners attended a special meeting of the town board of trustees Tuesday. On the agenda? The town’s plan to establish a workgroup to “gather information and talk about ideas” for the future of the 70-year-old Meeker Elementary School building.
Ownership of the building will revert to the town when the school district vacates the premises. The town will become responsible for expenses related to the site, starting with an engineering survey to determine whether or not the building itself can be salvaged.
The workgroup, which Meeker Mayor Mandi Etheridge said she would like to see involve the town, the county, the chamber of commerce, and the historical society, will also include citizen representation.
Several members of the neighborhood have already organized their own group, and said they would ask one or two individuals to represent the neighborhood’s interests for the workgroup.
In the interest of efficiency, the workgroup will be limited to five or six members. Public discussions will provide opportunity for citizens to make their opinions known.
The goal of the group, according to Etheridge, will be “finding an efficient route to get information funneled to us so we can begin making decisions.”
Workgroup appointments and scheduling the workgroup’s first meeting is expected to take place next week at the regular meeting of the town board of trustees.
