Young wrestlers compete at Rifle

MEEKER I Several Cowboys from Meeker spent their final Saturday of spring break competing in the season-opening peewee wrestling tournament in Rifle. Twenty-six Cowboys wrestled and 18 placed in the top four, including five champions.
Jesus Holland-Gonzalez, Wyatt Pfau, Casey Turner, Joshua Cochran and Austin Purcell all won gold medals in their respective brackets. Trae Kennedy, Kelton Turner, Braydon Garcia, Anthony Holland-Gonzalez, Ivette Ayala, Garrett Frantz, Caleb Bradford and James Amick finished as runners-up.
Ty Goedert, Tannen Kennedy, Kasia Cochran and Chase Rule were consolation champions and Jeffery Cole placed fourth.
Kaleb Nielsen, Kesston Hobbs, Tony Portillo, Brandon Benitez, Kale Burke, Doak Mantle, Sam Alldredge, Jared Owens and Daylon Nielsen wrestled but did place.
More than 60 boys and girls are participating in the peewee program and several will wrestle in the Craig tournament Saturday at Moffat County High School.
Meeker will host a peewee tournament April 17.
