Several members of the Meeker Community Wrestling Club opened the youth season in Craig last Saturday and more than half of them placed in the top four.
“We have some things to work on but it was a good tournament,” coach Carl Padilla said of the first outing, held on the last Saturday of Meeker’s spring break.
Seventeen of the 27 wrestlers placed in the top four, including champions James Amick and Garrett Frantz. Cooper Main, Kesston Hobbs, Reese Harvey and Jared Owens were all runners-up. Tannen Kennedy made it to the championship match in two age divisions and finished second in both.
Stephen Koenig, Trae Kennedy, Colton Wille, Elijah Deming and Adrian Carabontes were all consolation champs, while Jacob Blazon, Parker Pontine and Ashdon Seibert finished fourth.
Coach Padilla expects more Meeker wrestlers to compete this Saturday in Rangely, where wrestlers eight and under will start at 9 a.m., followed by the 14-12 and 10-and under divisions at 1 p.m.
