MEEKER I Each year, some 350 bird species migrate between summer and winter habitats. Their flights span state and national boundaries and have inspired unique partnerships dedicated to bird conservation. International Migratory Bird Day celebrates these migrating birds each year in May.

Funeral services for Jeanne N. Hollenbaugh will be held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, June 7, at the St. James Episcopal Church in Meeker, Colo. Jeanne passed away on May 26, 2011, after a brief stay in the Lutheran Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

Lakeside Cafe opens again
After a two-year hiatus, the Lakeside Cafe at Kenney Reservoir is open again. Lisa Hodges opened the Lakeside Cafe before Memorial Day weekend. It will open each week on Thursdays through the weekend.

Fun with beef
RANGELY I For the last few days, we have been making beef jerky. It was a lot of fun! We were each given about 10 pieces of beef. We had to marinade it with a certain “Hawaiian” marinade, then we were allowed to add additional seasonings to our meat!
Meekerites demonstrate generosity again
MEEKER I More than 325 dinner tickets were sold to the After Birth Ball held on May 21. Thanks to all those in attendance, the Friends of the FFA raised nearly $11,000 from the dinner, the live and silent auctions and the “kids’ coupon table.

MEEKER | United State Army Private First Class John Corey Johnson, 28, a former resident of Meeker, was killed in action Friday, May 27, 2011, in Kandahar province in Afghanistan.
