MEEKER I Couples from Englewood, Castle Rock, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Rifle, Moab, Utah and Rock Springs, Wyo., joined eight teams from Rio Blanco County to complete a field of 24 in the annual Meeker Golf Course couples tournament held last weekend. The field was divided evenly into two flights and the best golfers on the course were from Glenwood Springs.Roger and Taylor Walters led by eight shots after 18 holes of play on the first day and finished 10 strokes ahead of the nearest competition to win the 2011 title. The Walters shot a 3-under-par 65 Saturday last and added two shots to finish with a gross score of 132, winning the championship flight.Brother and sister Eddie Rubin and Amanda Back came in second and Rio Blanco County mother/son team Ellen Boudreaux and Ron Kelly Crawford finished third with a 148.Meeker’s Peggy and George Back had the best net score (101) in the championship flight, giving Mark and Carla Fergen of Rifle second place eight shots behind and 15 ahead of Moab’s Jim and Evelyn Woosley.Delwyn Fletcher and Dorlene Byers made it a clean sweep for Glenwood Springs couples, as the pair won the second flight with a gross score of 161. Davey Jones and Linda Ditsworth of Englewood, Colo., finished second eight shots back. Lee and Linda Hanson of Stan Valley, Wyo., finished third in the second flight with a gross score of 173.Former Meeker residents Tom and Sherry Rubin had the best net score (106) in the second flight. Charlie DeBenedictis and Sandra Council of Castle Rock finished second with a net score of 118 and Rob Peterson and Diane Jones of Rock Springs, Wyo., placed third, one shot back.The next tournament at the Meeker Golf Course will be the United Way tournament Aug. 27.
