Led by team captains Jake Phelan and Tristin Pelloni, Meeker wrestlers finished second out of 13 teams at the East Grand Middle School Tournament.
Head coach Lee Overton was “excited to see that some of the hard work in practice is paying off for our kids.” Pelloni had no trouble with his opponents, as he pinned his way through the tournament.
Phelan easily made his way to the finals, but needed overtime to win his final match.
“Maybe the most exciting match of the year‚” assistant coach J.C. Watt said of Phelan’s overtime win.
Cody Purcell, Robby Jensen, Austin Purcell and Dillon Frantz all finished second.
Anthony Watt and Ruben Roybal came back through the consolations to finish in third place.
Also competing but not placing were Kylloe Geodert, Jake Nielsen, Matt Frantz, Noah Overton, Sheridan Harvey, Casey Turner, Cody Nielsen and Tyler Ilgen.
Meeker will travel to Grand Junction this Saturday to compete in the middle school regional tournament, the qualifier for the middle school state tournament.
