Devon Rose to represent state in national showcase

RANGELY — Devon Rose, who finished fourth at the state wrestling tournament, will represent Colorado in the Brute Scholastic Showcase this weekend.
Rose, a junior at Rangely High School, will wrestle at 125 pounds, which was the weight class he competed in during the recent season.
The news of Rose’s selection came as a surprise.
“It was quite a shock to us, because we just found out last week,” Rose’s father, Dusti, said. “There was a kid from Chaparral (High School), who was selected before him, but he backed out at the last minute.”
The showcase, sponsored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, will be held this weekend at York, Pa. The Colorado entry will be coached by Miles Van Hee, wrestling coach at Colorado Western College in Gunnison, who selected Rose for the team.
“There are 24 teams, from all over, New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois,” Dusti said. “There’s no one else from the Meeker, Rangely area (on the Colorado team), but there’s a kid from Grand Junction, and two from Olathe. Those are the only four going from the Western Slope.”
Since finding out he was selected to the Colorado team, Devon has been working on getting in shape. Fast.
“He’s been trying to condition and lose weight,” Dusti said. “He gets a five-pound allowance. He’s down around 133. He’s lost a bunch. He was up to 142.”
Since the state tournament, Devon last competed at the Rocky Mountain Nationals on March 20-22 in Denver.
Asked how Devon did, Dusti said, “Not very good. He was 1-2. He was out of shape there, too.”
