Father-son team wins scramble at Meeker Saturday

The annual 27-hole, two-man scramble golf tournament, played last Saturday, May 16 at the Meeker Golf Course was sponsored this year by Berry Brothers Construction and featured 30 teams divided into two flights. Fifteen pairs were affiliated with the local construction company and 15 Meeker men’s club teams.
George and Jason Back were the best pair on the course. The father-son team shot a 16-under-par 86, six strokes better than second-place winners Dave Brown and J.C. Watt.
“Sixteen under might be the best ever,” Watt said of the Backs’ score. “That’s good.”
Everyone noticed the great play of the Backs, especially Jason’s.
“Jason is playing like a pro,” local golf pro Jim Cook said. “It’s not like the old man didn’t help, although George is a good partner. Jason was driving and putting well.”
“Dad and I were talking last night and we’ve played together in this tournament for like 20 years,” Jason said before teeing off No. 1 for the first time in the tournament.
Two teams in each flight — with the best gross and net scores — were crowned champions, with Pat Hughes and Pat Coryell matched up against longtime rivals Lex Collins and Erik Brown in the men’s club flight.
“I thought our playing partners would be better competition and the team to beat, but the Backs were the ones to watch,” Hughes said. “It would have been the first time ever for Erik and Lex to beat Pat and Pat, but we stayed above them.”
Hughes and his brother-in-law finished with a gross score of 93, one shot ahead of Collins and Brown and a net score that was three stokes ahead of their rivals and good enough for first place.
Former Meeker golf pro Dennis Rohn and Tommy Gilmore won the Berry Brothers flight with a gross score of 100, which was 10 shots better than Shawn Ducitt and Kyle Vessel.
George and Shelly Kuck shot a gross score of 108, but tied with Randy Hall and Patty Merriam for first place with net score of 80.
The annual Lady’s Deerfly is scheduled for June 6 at the Meeker Golf Course.
