MEEKER I The school bells haven’t started ringing at Meeker High School yet but referee whistles were heard in both gyms last Saturday as the lady Cowboys hosted scrimmages with Grand Valley and Moffat County.
“All three teams played,” head coach Christy Atwood said of the scrimmages against the larger schools. “We had a great summer program with lots of participation and we accomplished what we wanted in practice. Now we will see how we do on the scoreboard.”
Meeker will be led by seniors Kathryn Doll, Katie Morgan, Aubrey Walsh and Adrienne Wix. Because of other commitments, they were not all on the court for the scrimmages.
“It will be good to have them all in the gym at the same time this weekend in Glenwood Springs,” Atwood said of their first tournament of the season, with pool play starting Friday.
“This weekend will be a good measuring stick,” Atwood said. “We’ll be able to better gauge where we are after we get some scores on the board.”
Roxy Chintala and Stacy LeBlanc will assist Atwood with the 36 players out for the three teams. Meeker’s JV and C-team will play a tournament in Palisade this Saturday and Atwood believes her team is ready for the competition.
“We’ve taken a different approach to our conditioning this year,” Atwood said. “We’ve been working on our strengthening our cores and stronger vertical jumps.”
Atwood said Northwest League rival West Grand is in their pool and they may see Rangely if both teams advance out of pool play.
