MEEKER I There are a couple of holiday-related events this weekend to kick off the Christmas shopping season in Meeker.
The second annual Meeker Parade of Lights will be held Friday with activities beginning at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Meeker.
The events, sponsored by the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, Pioneers Healthcare Foundation, Meeker Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Meeker High School and the Meeker Elementary School Choir, will feature a tree-lighting ceremony, the Meeker Elementary School Choir performing carols, the VFW Color Guard, a gingerbread house silent auction and then the parade, which will be followed by a fireworks display.
This year’s parade and celebration theme is “Merry Meeker Lights.”
Downtown merchants are being urged to stay open for shopping until at least 8 p.m., and several of those merchants will be offering specials and discounts.
If individuals or groups would like to enter a float in the parade, they are asked to call the Meeker Chamber of Commerce at 970-878-5510 soon as possible.
On Sunday is the fundraising Horizons Little Points of Light Home Tour, which will run from 5 to 8 p.m.
Five Meeker homes will be heavily decorated with a holiday theme for the tour, then those who take the tour are invited to Wendll’s Wondrous Things for warm drinks, door prizes and desserts provided by Ma Famiglia.
Tickets are $12 each or two for $20, available at Wendll’s, the Horizons office at 685 Main St. or, on the day of the event starting at 5 p.m., at the home of Hal and Julie Pearce, 1143 Michael Circle.
All proceeds will benefit the children and families in Horizons’ Rio Blanco County Early Intervention and Family Support programs.
The tour will feature the decorated homes of Hal and Julie Pearce, Stan and Amber Garcia, Steve and Christy Knight, Amy May and Joe and Kaycee Sullivan.
