MHS volleyball No. 2 seed for district tournament

MEEKER I The Meeker volleyball team finished its regular season with two more wins, securing them the No. 2 seed for the district tournament and setting up a match up against Rangely again on Tuesday night, in the first round of the district tournament.
The two teams met Friday night in Rangely. “Our matches against Rangely are always tough,” MHS coach Christy Atwood said.
Atwood knew the Panthers would be fired up on their home court for their last home game. Meeker stayed composed after losing game one to finish the match with three straight wins, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-23.
The lady Cowboys stuck with their theme of controlling the level of play, limiting unforced errors and finishing strong, building momentum for their final home game Saturday against West Grand.
Atwood said, “Our last match of the season was special on many different fronts. As a team, we have made it a point to spread the word about breast cancer awareness.
“Our final match we ‘pinked’ the gym for this great cause,” she said. “It was also our seniors’ last regular season home game. We honored Piper Haney, Taylor Neilson and Aly Ridings.”
The seniors have done an outstanding job all season and this past weekend was no exception. The three combined for 37 kills, seven aces, and 69 digs for the weekend.
Atwood added, “They are leading by example.”
This leadership not only led them to an outstanding regular season, but they are now sitting in great shape for the post season.
The lady Cowboys look to carry their momentum into Paonia and continue to raise the level of their play for three more weekends after a win Tuesday against county rival Rangely in three straight games.
The four winning teams of the first round will play in the District tournament on Saturday in Paonia.
