MEEKER — It was one of the largest fields in recent years playing in the annual Meeker Men’s Club championship last Saturday and one of the closest. Twenty-nine golfers were split into two flights and played 18 holes on a beautiful Colorado fall day. Multi-time club champion J.C. Watt came from behind to earn bragging rights for a year.
Rex Copeland led at the turn with a two-over-par 36 and matched it the on the back nine but it wasn’t enough to win the club championship. Watt trailed Copeland by one shot after the first nine holes but backed it with an even par to win the championship with a three-over-par 71.
Copeland used his handicap to win first place net honors with a 61, giving last year’s men’s club champion Lex Collins second with a gross score of 74. Meeker Golf Course manager Darrin Rohn had the second best net score in the championship flight.
“We had a great turnout and it ran smoothly,” Rohn said of the tournament.
Copeland’s father Ken, had to come from behind to win the first flight, just as Watt did in the championship flight. Irv Griffin was five-over-par after the first nine holes but the elder Copeland was just one shot behind.
Ken Copeland took one stroke off on the back nine to win the first flight, while Griffin added two strokes on the back nine to take top net honors.
Norbert Boes finished second in the first flight with a gross score of 85, while Tim Nelson was second with a net score of 64, one behind Griffin’s net score.
