The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago

  • J.L. McHatton arrived home from Illinois bringing with him 12 head of fine Norman-Percheron horses.
  • County warrants 65 cents at J.W. Hugus & Co.
  • Link Tagert came up with the Piceance delegation.
  • Ed Wilber is now foreman for the Niblock Cattle Company.
  • “Pap” Rice will open his restaurant about Monday or Tuesday. It will be run on the “short order” system.
  • J.A. Nicholas is getting up a very handsome sign for Watson’s store.
  • Town Recorder Attix issued dog licenses to the amount of $15.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

  • The Union Oil Company purchased the Edgar Peltier property on west Market Street. Mr. Peltier owned the log house and four lots on Market Street extending from the corner of 10th and Market. The house and all the buildings will be removed.
  • Winners of the Meeker elementary school spelling bee are Tommy Steen, Paul Jensen, Roger Weir and Bille Jean Spence. The junior high winners are Vina Lee Clapper, Laurie Steen, Doris Anderson and Gene Starbuck.
  • Snow course at Rio Blanco Ranch 75 percent of normal.
  • Despite the light winter the streams of the Western Slope are holding up to 88 to 92 percent of normal. The big test will come, however, when the runoff starts in April and May.

  • The town council unanimously commits to downtown development.
  • Judy Morris, Relda Coulter, Pat Robinson, Laurie Pontine, Betty Morlan, Diana Tobin, Lynne Teller, Janiece Hermanson, Lori Farris, Lil Orris, Boots Penny, Bette Carnahan, Lil Ross, Joan Bates, Carrie Bina, Karen Fey, Mary King, Audrey Squires, Vicky Fresch, Ada Gillis, Linda Coufos, Judy Coats, Danette Coulter and Julie Purkey were in Denver last weekend at the state bowling tournament.
  • The Whisperin’ Pines restaurant will open Sunday, April 13 at 410 Market Street. A new restaurant with a large variety of fine foods.
  • Led by Mike Parr and Rex Copeland, Meeker swept the long jump and high jump events in last weekend’s track meet.
  • Matt Hughes caught a 16 pound, 3 ounce Mackinaw measuring 38 inches in length while fishing “somewhere on Piceance Creek.”
  • Becca Mobley was selected as the 1986 Range Call Queen, with first attendant Haley McKay and second attendant Ann Marie Nielsen.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago

  • George Tookey was installed as the new Exalted Ruler of Rangely Lodge No. 1907, B.P.O.E.
  • The Rangely Elkettes are having their annual Easter Egg Hunt for all children under 12 in the community.
  • The Federal government may take as much as $50 billion in individual income taxes this year.
  • “One nice thing about putting words on paper, you don’t have to remember what you said … they stare at you when you goof.”
  • The Rangely Junior High wrestling team won the NWL wrestling tournament. Blue ribbon winners were Paul Pilcher, Barry Wardell, Skip Smuts, Bill Hume and Mickey Bennett.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago

  • The results of the town election are as follows: James Sinclair, mayor. Trustees will be Everett Jones, Leonard Smith, Robert Dey, Leland Beyers, Peggy Rector and Alan Nielsen.
  • CNCC has been awarded full membership in the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
  • Rangely Middle School’s students of the month for February were Jeff LeBleu and Teresa Howard.
  • Golden ripe bananas, 19 cents per pound at Bestway. One dozen eggs, 59 cents.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

  • Local winners in the Elks Hoop Shoot contest were Jennifer Love, Dena Banta, Rusti Fox, Julie Love, Randy Elam, Kale Brady, Keven Mullen, Darin Fielding, Jeremy Robertson, Brian Prater, Laura Flores, Elaine Brenton, Meegun McCord and Saffy Ott.
  • Dinosaur voters chose Carl Sommermeyer for mayor; Frank Lancaster, Mike Snyder and Barbara Butler for four-year trustee terms.
  • March weather in Rangely was the warmest on record, with an average temperature of 46 degrees.
  • Mountain Bell announces ‘good news’ for customers.
