~ Eleven inches of snow has fallen since April 1 and 7 feet minus 2 inches since Nov. 6. The lowest estimate is 4,000 dead animals on the range. There will be no dividends for White River cattle companies this year.
~ The initial steps toward beautifying the park were taken this weekend. Messrs. Nichols and Miner spent the good part of the fore part of this week setting out shade trees.
~ Schools closed for the term Friday.
~ Paul Wagner has bought Simon Fisher’s new house on Seventh Street.

~ County commissioners have been informed that the state highway department will be calling for bids on the Nine Mile hill project up Highway 13. The highway department last year set up $200,000 for betterment and stabilization of Highway 64 between Meeker and Rangely.
~ The work on the White River Electric building on the corner of Sixth and Market streets is now completed and they are starting the move to their new quarters.
~ Sheriff Harp has announced that he has two .22 rifles at the sheriff’s office. These rifles were taken from two lads who told the sheriff they “found” them recently.
~ Bad weather caused the cancellation of baseball and the track meet last week.

~ Projecting a deficit of between $100,000 and $170,000 in their $3 million budget this year, members of the Re-1 school board have scheduled a work session to discuss their options.
~ Top honors at the annual intermediate school science fair went to Martha Taylor for her lemon-battery driven clock mechanism. Ray Wood’s burn project came in second. Lisa Bivens’ chicken-hatching experiment took third.
~ Meeker’s own super skiers have struck again. Kent Borchard scored well with a perfect seat and feet first landing after having extricated himself and members of his party from the trees while Joe Fennessey was disqualified for falling off the lift. The Snowmass ski patrol loves to see this group coming as it promises them plenty of work, if not overtime.

~ Sixty-two children were absent from school with the mumps.
~ Rangely’s track team won second place at the Yampa Valley invitational track meet. Events won included the 100 and 200 by Kenny Sams and the 440 by Therlo George.
~ Junie Tynes celebrated her birthday on April 13.
~ Huber Jewelry moved from their location next door to the light company to the theatre building.

~ Rio Blanco County spelling contest winners Greg Calhoun and Kathy Lansing, both of Rangely, took first and second place in the contest.
~ The Rangely Public Library will soon move into the former laundromat building.
~ A patent has been issued to Equity Oil Co. for a new way to extract oil from oil shale.
~ Marine Private Alan L. Mobley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zandy Mobley, was graduated from Marine recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif.
~ At Bestway: ground round, 69 cents per pound; plain or almond Hershey bars, 10 for 39 cents.

~ The fifth annual Channel 9 Health Fair was held at the new middle school. 186 people participated.
~ Douglas Pass is expected to remain closed until June or July due to mudslides and washed out road sections.
~ Six RHS students were on the “A” honor roll for the third quarter: seniors Susan Blocker and Natalie Smith, sophomores Jerry Dalrymple and Brett Powell; and freshmen Kelli Collins and Phoebe Day.
~ The Panther baseball team now has a record of four wins and three losses, winning three of the last four games to date.
