Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• A very enjoyable social dance was given on Saturday evening last at the residence of Mrs. George Wagner. The music was furnished by Messrs. Ames and Gilmore.
• One of the features of the Fourth of July celebration at Meeker will be horse and foot racing. Mr. J.W. Welch of the O.K. Saloon will give you all the desired information on the races.
• Mr. Reed of Kansas got as far as the White River on the lookout for a ranch and home and concluded that it was about the slickest place he had struck. He has now made a location on Flag Creek, had his ranch surveyed and gone to work in regular old granger style.
• The race between Morris Dreifus’s “Dick,” Harry Goff’s “Bay Gelding” and Simp Harp’s “Cyclone” resulted in a tie.
• Miss Addie Wash, niece of J.L. and Miss Mollie McHatton, arrived in Meeker by Tuesday evening’s state. We extend to Miss Wash a hearty welcome and hope her visit to the White River metropolis may be an enjoyable one.
• F.N. JoHantgen of Leadville was in town in the forepart of the week. Mr. JoHantgen thinks of going into the blacksmithing business in Meeker.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• The chamber of commerce is again lining up a beauty queen contest for the Fourth of July parade. Contestants will appear in bathing suits and formals and will be judged on poise, personality, beauty and charm. Girls living in Rio Blanco County between the ages of 16 and 20 are eligible. Please supply the following information to apply: name, town, phone, age, waist, hips, weight, height, bust.
• Registered for swim classes to begin June 20: Betty Allen, Joe Conrado, David Coates, Betty Crook, Bren Nicol, Tommy Nicol, Leslie Sorenson, Mary Villa and John Villa.
• “Gone With the Wind” has been scheduled by the Rio Theatre for next Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and will replace the picture “Where the Boys Are.” The picture is being run in many theatres throughout the United States in cooperation with the centennial celebration of the Civil War this year.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
• The White River was expected to reach its runoff peak this week, checking in at around 4,000 cubic feet per second, considerably lower than the record flow of 6,950 cfs set two years ago.
• Kim Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. James K. Cook and former Meeker High School graduate, was among those receiving his master of divinity degree from Denver Seminary last week.
• A total of 363 people took part in the 74th annual Oldtimers’ Reunion, the largest gathering to date.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
• The Rangely Days parade was made colorful with 31 entries Saturday afternoon. The Epsilon Chi float took first prize in the best decorated float division.
• The yard of the week plaque went to the yard of Miss Grace Petz. Miss Petz is an organic gardener and has been gardening in her yard in this manner since 1958.
• Kris Hayden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hayden, celebrated his fifth birthday.
• Mary Bell was chosen Miss Rangely High. Her attendants were Carol Pilcher and Zuva Kenney.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
• Americans throughout the land will have the opportunity, this year, to participate personally in a mammoth salute to the 4th of July. Bicentennial celebration leaders are encouraging communities, businesses, organizations and individuals to fly the flag continuously for 21 days from Flag Day through Independence Day.
• Top students in sixth, seventh and eighth grads were named in subject matter fields: U.S. history, Paula Olree; beginning band, Bret Reed; advanced band, Debbie Clugston; chorus, Jeannine Poole; pep club, Monica Wright.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
• Miss Shannon Harper, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Harper of Rangely, was crowned princess of the 1986 Rio Blanco County Little Britches Rodeo. Her attendants were Amanda Mott and Jaime Hume.
• Loyann Hayes and Don Rooks were named 1986 queen and king at the “Last Gym Dance” sponsored by the RHS Alumni Association.
• CNCC won the National Little College Athletic Association Baseball Tournament.
