Rio Blanco Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
n Judging by the financial statements of Meeker’s two banks, that town is one of the most prosperous in the state. Rio Blanco is isolated from the rest of the world insofar as a railroad is concerned, and possibly in many respects they are more prosperous because of that fact.
n Moving picture show Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
n Some of the riverfront citizens were flooded this week in consequence of the gorge overflows.
n Fred Carstens did the Santa Claus act early in the week.
n Vernal went “dry” last town election and not the “bootlegger” has appeared.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
n The Meeker High School building was broken into sometime last weekend. While nothing of value was taken from the building other than a few tools from the show, about $500 damage was done to the building and its contents.
n Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mefford are planning a big New Year’s dance at their Stage Coach Inn on Saturday night of this week, Dec. 30.
n Tom Burroughs, 22, shot himself last week while on a duck hunting trip. Burroughs had crippled a duck and tried to kill it by hitting it on the head with his shotgun. As he came down on the head of the duck with the butt of the gun, it accidentally discharged hitting Burroughs in the chest and killing him within a few minutes.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
n The teachers and school staff celebrated a break for the holidays at the golf course last weekend, an early start on regaining their collective sanity. The post office stopping rushing and stamping and sorting to celebrate at Sleepy Cat while the tried and true bus drivers also took out their earplugs and celebrated.
n The Meeker town staff and members of the board of trustees surprised Mayor Gus Halandras on his natal day, Dec. 22, with a surprise birthday party at city hall. Among the more tasteful gifts was a straightjacket to ease him through town meetings and a “little people’s savers account” for his huge salary.
n George and Patsy Nay are glad to have daughter Danina home from college in California for the holidays.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
n Hugh Caldwell, cattleman, was re-elected to the BLM Advisory Board for a three-year term by vote of the public land users.
n FBI agents were in Rangely Dec. 13 to investigate a broken glass in the Bank of Rangely side door. The agents, after their investigation, expressed an opinion that the glass was broken accidentally, possibly from gravel thrown by a passing car.
n Join our party! Dance the new year in with music by the Westernairs at the Rio Roller Rink from 10 p.m. to 2 p.m. $1 per person.
n “A mistletoe is a parasite with lots of little parasites under it.”

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
n Emil and Marti Nielsen are proud to announce the arrival of Jennifer Rose Nielsen. She was born Friday, Dec. 17 at 12:40. She weighed 6 lbs., and was 18 inches long.
n The 1976 residential lighting contest was judged by a committee from the chamber of commerce on Dec. 22. There were eight entries. First place was awarded to Tom Staley, second place to Mary Hall and third place to Leonard Smith.
n RHS football team tailback Alan Stahlecker and guard Jody Lee received Class AA all-state honors.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
n If you were driving down Main Street Thursday, Dec. 18, and heard laughter and music coming from inside the Beauty Bar, it was for real. There were 21 ladies enjoying a potluck supper. It was a going away party for JoLynn Kitson who is moving to Page, Ariz., and a welcome home party for Cherry Fellows.
n Potholders will stay cleaner longer if given a heavy treatment of spray starch.
