Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
~ The national western stock show to be held in Denver Jan. 15-20 has grown to be the big agricultural event of the west. The Colorado Midland Railway Co. announces a special rate of one fare for round trip.
~ The fire which destroyed the bunkhouse in the rear of the Meeker Hotel last Friday night looked dangerous for a time, owing the headway it had attained before discovery and the slowness in getting water on the blaze. The structure consisted of two rooms and was occupied as sleeping quarters by the hotel porters.
~ James Sheridan was among the college boys who spent holiday week with the home folks.
~ Just arrived: bobsleds, for buggies or spring wagons at JoHantgen’s.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
~ The J. Gentry home in the north part of town was badly gutted by fire on Sunday afternoon of this week. The fire had started in a closet in the basement. The Gentry children were playing in the basement one of the children entered the closet with a lighted candle.
~ The cold nights have been just the ticket for making good skating ice and the Meeker skating rink back of the junior high building is about the most popular place in town.
~ The Herald learned this past week that the stork had visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Leander in Axial Basin leaving them another fine baby, a daughter who has been named Margo and was born Nov. 3. Mrs. Leander will be remembered by her many Meeker friends as Joyce Proctor who was our county superintendent of schools for several years.
~ Miss Margaret Ruth Williamson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lindley Williamson of Denver, became the bride of Larry Marvin Shults, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude E. Shults of Meeker.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
~ Meeker firemen were quick to respond to the Otto Shults’ residence Christmas Day after a coal stoker water furnace malfunctioned. Fortunately there was no major damage.
~ Unocal Corporation this week said it began shipping high quality synthetic crude oil from its Parachute Creek shale oil project.
~ The Holy Family Catholic Church began a year of celebration to commemorate 75 years as a parish.
~ Like the rest of the country, flags were flown at half-mast in honor of the fallen astronauts from the Challenger space shuttle disaster.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
~ Two Western Slope nuclear test shots were proposed in Washington. One on the Dragon Trail gas field and one in the Rulison gas field southwest of Rifle. The aim of the shots would be the fracture the tight formations and greatly increase natural gas production.
~ “Aliens must report addresses.”
~ Mark G. Danielson of Rangely received his gold second lieutenant bars at his college graduation and commission ceremony. He will be a navigator assigned to Mather AFB in Sacramento, Calif.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
~ Paul B. Wade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Wade of Rangely, was promoted to Lieutenant in the United States Navy Supply Corps.
~ Lynn Whiteman, a Rio Blanco County resident, was selected as the “Conservationist of the Year” by the Colorado Chapter of the Soil Conservation Society of America.
~ Citizens are reminded that it is unlawful for the parent, guardian or other adult person having the care and custody of a minor under the age of 19 years to permit the minor to loiter, idle, wander, stroll or play in or upon the public streets, parks or other public grounds and plays after 10:30 p.m. during the week and after 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Rangely­Times — 25 years ago
~ Rangely True Value Hardware, Lance and Linda Stewart, owners, were the first place winners in the commercial holiday lighting contest. Jo and Beatrice Brown at 856 E. Main won the residential category.
~ A new high-tech treatment for blood pressure enters through a patch worn on the skin.
n Steven L. Peel of Rangely received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Peel of Rangely.
