Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
– Town Marshal Nichols and a force of men used considerable dynamite on the ice gorge this week. The water is going down.
– Arrangements for the pioneers’ ball are progressing favorably. The Old-Timers’ Ball will be given Friday, Feb. 3, 1912.
– County Clerk Scott announces that he will issue marriage licenses free in cases where the girl popped the question. He reserves the right, however, to call this off if they come in too thick.
– Link Tagert received a brand-new typewriter this week. It is of standard make, has all the latest improvements, and is just the machine our county treasurer has been on the lookout for.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
– A business transaction which is of much interest to everyone in the county was recently completed when Allan Rogers leased his K-T ranch to John R. Norton and Carl Taussigh, Jr.
– It will be good news to everyone in the White River valley to know that the Colorado Game and Fish department plans to join in the fight to prevent the Rocky Mountain Power Company from diverting water from the South Fork of the White River.
– For sale: motel on Highway 13; well located; priced at $30,000. One-quarter down, balance in ten years. M.A. Fredericks, Realtor. Phone Meeker 278.
– Eleven FFA members from Meeker High School attended the Denver Stock Show: Gus Anderson, Bob Bloomfield, Ellis Eliasen, Reilly Hopson, Ken Johnson, Bill Lake, Sam Love, Bill Mannel, Wes McKay, Mark Sheridan, Dick George and John Devereaux. Cars were driven by Paul Starbuck, Art Lammers and Harley Bloomfield.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
– It was just the first time, but already promoters of the White River Rendezvous see a great future ahead for their winter showpiece.
– Starting this week, the Super 8 grocery store will be making the transition from a grocery store to a general department store. Citing economic factors and the opening of the town’s third grocery store, Valley Grocery, Super 8 manager John Hutchins said the change is something he’s been thinking about for awhile.
– Meeker’s first baby of the year finally arrived at Pioneers Hospital as Kimberly Fern Brown came into the world last Friday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. David and Jackie Brown’s first baby weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 19 inches in length. Pioneers Hospital usually averages between 35 and 50 births a year.
– A welcome addition to the sporting events this winter has been the Gold Dust Pompom Squad under the direction of Roberta Watt. The nine-member girls’ team performed for the third time last week.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
– Hugh Caldwell, beginning his 29th year as county commissioner, was named chairman of the board Tuesday at the annual reorganization meeting. William Murray was named chairman pro tem. Ivo Shults is the retiring chairman.
– Results of the elk herd inventory of the main White River area were released last week. In a counting time of 21 hours from Dec. 28-Jan.2, a total of 3,781 animals were counted as compared to last year’s count of 3,330 and 3,121 in 1965.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
– Wayne Kelley was named superintendent of schools for the 1977-78 term, replacing Stahlecker.
– At the Campus Theatre: “Logan’s Run” starring Michael York. “Welcome to the 23rd century. The only thing you can’t have in this perfect world of total pleasure is your 30th birthday.”
– CNCC is offering a class in speed reading.
– State Senator Richard “Dick” Soash took the oath of office from Chief Justice Edward Pringle of the Colorado Supreme Court.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
– Seth Joseph Brenton became the first baby morn in the Rangely District Hospital for 1987. Born Jan. 11, Seth’s parents are Bobby and Glenda Brenton and grandparents are Richard and Elizabeth Brenton of Rangely.
– The problem of sheep trailing through private lots in LaMesa was presented to the Rangely Board of Trustees.
– Students of the month for December 1986 were Clarence Hamilton and Christy Rogers.
– Second graders at Parkview Elementary earned awards in the Mighty Mouse contest for memorizing addition and subtraction facts.
