Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
n Good four-room house and three lots; corner Park Avenue and Fourth Street; southern frontage. Inquire at this office.
n The big snowstorm which visited the eastern slope early in the week sidestepped this section.
n The Hugus company set up a handsome metal art electric light post at their corner this week.
n Dr. Hubbard is now comfortably located in the Sheridan residence, next door north of the Herald office. The doctor’s office will be at the same place.
n Tuesday forenoon, while making a connection with the water main on east Main Street, Ralph Lyttle was blown from the trench by a “blow-off” of compressed air. He was bruised enough to need the attention of Dr. French to attend his injuries.
n All agreed that it was the duty and interest of the people of White River valley to assist in every way possible to get the coast to coast highway through by way of Rifle, Meeker and Vernal, Utah, to Salt Lake City. A committee of nine was appointed to take charge of this matter: J.C. Gentry, W.H. Clark, L.B. Walbridge, W.S. Montgomery, A.H. Adams, F.E. Sheridan, J.A. Blair, T.D. Riley and H.P. Spurlock.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
n Mr. Tom Offerle, who will be the manager of the Meeker swimming pool this summer, tells us the pool will open on May 30.
n Dick Moyer has moved his sawmill from Meeker to a new location north of Highway 64 a short distance west of the Stage Coach Inn.
n We will roll grain only by appointment during the summer months effective May 7. Those wanting grain rolled please contact Hal Pearce.
n We are very happy to welcome the Herbert Blaggs to Meeker. Mr. Blagg has purchased the Russell Drug Store and definitely plans to make his home here. He, his wife Bea, and son Mike, who will be 11 on July 4, are living at present over the bank and will be moving soon to more permanent quarters.

n Re-1 taxes to jump 30-45 percent. The surprising reality of an amendment passed by Colorado voters five years ago hit home this week for thousands of Rio Blanco County property owners.
n Rio Blanco County property owner Malcolm Bricklin and the RBC commissioners had the first of several meetings about expanding the Meeker Airport to handle jets.
n Principal Hanks is scheduled to give the initial welcoming remarks to the audience prior to the passing of the mantle. This year the highest ranking senior, Amy Batka, will pass the coveted cape to highest ranking junior Kellie Borchard. Fifty-three seniors will be graduated from Meeker High School.
n Could the solution to the county courthouse heating and air conditioning problem be as simple as a $32 ceiling fan?
n Joan Ball has retired after 26 years teaching in the Meeker Schools.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
n The baccalaureate service for the RHS class of 54 members is scheduled for May 21. Commencement exercises will be held Tuesday, May 23 at 8 p.m.
n Rangely residents who are interested in having their street blacktopped this summer should contact Mayor B.F. Yaeger or one of the council members within the next two weeks.
n Senior Pete Miller was honored at the annual Quarterback Club banquet when he received the Grace Petz award as the outstanding athlete of the year.
n Former University of Utah grid star Bill Turner has accepted a coaching post in Denver next fall. The former Rangely High School star athlete will serve as assistant football and head wrestling coach at Mullin High School in Denver. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Enterline of Rangely.
n The second program in Rangely College’s new aerospace series has been readied in time for September admissions. This one, of special interest to young women, is designated the airline stewardess major.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
n Fifty-seven seniors will receive their diplomas at Rangely High School on May 24 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
n Monty Hewett and Melanie Warren have chosen June 16, 1977, as their wedding date.
n Rangely Middle School students of the month are Gordon Lewis and Lori Hazelwood.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
n Forty-seven seniors will march down the aisle on Saturday, May 23 to receive their diplomas from Rangely High School. The class of 1987 will have the distinction of being the first class to graduate from the new high school.
n The grand opening of the Adventureland Video was a gala event. The owners, Jerry and Jackie Lehman, and their Adventureland Lion spent the entire day making their customers welcome.
n Charles Allred and Jeffrey Edelen were the class valedictorians for the RHS class of 1987.
n Rangely Middle School students of the month were Fred Hazelwood and Geri Ann Gunderson.
