Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
n Bert Salter of the Park, looked the town folks over Monday.
n Dr. Montgomery reports the arrival of a girl at Frank Gowers, on the Mesa.
n Frank Sheridan spent last week over on Grand River in the hopeless task of trying to out-run Barney Napier for the senatorship. Barney has the longest legs and is bound to win.
n Mrs. S. F. Wetmore, who has been living in Denver for over a year past, writes to say she is enjoying good health.
n It looks as though Highway Commissioner Allen has “double-crossed” us. Mr. Allen, it is reported, is working for the Grand Junction sand desert route to Salt Lake City. When in Meeker, he declared in favor of the Rifle-Meeker-Vernal route.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
n The first fatal hunting accident in this areas was reported Monday, when Emil D. Jacobson, 30, of Littleton was killed at Triangle Park northwest of New Castle.
n Five persons were found dead on Monday of this week in the wreckage of their car at the bottom of a 64-foot deep gully just off Highway 64. The speedometer on the car was stuck at 100 miles an hour.
n Gus Halandras returned home last week after a three month trip to Greece and other Mediterranean countries. He reports a fine time and enjoyed every minute. He went over on a boat from New York and flew home.
n Mabel Jenkins from Grand Junction has been visiting in Meeker while her husband was on a hunting trip in the valley. Mrs. Jenkins is the daughter of Robert E. Swain and step-daughter of George Suttles, both pioneer residents of the community. While here Mrs. Jenkins was a guest of Dorothy Kehrberger.

n The MHS marching band traveled to Delta last week to attend the annual street marching competition and finished fourth.
n Among the many surprises Jennie Spence received at her surprise 90th birthday party recently was a plaque which she prizes most highly. In appreciation of 50 years as a dedicated school teacher in the Meeker area. Mrs. Spence’s family and friends have established the “Jennie Spence Memorial Scholarship Fund” at the First National Bank of Meeker.
n Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hughes announce the engagement of their daughter, Carey Ann, to First Lieutenant Anthony Seely, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Seely, all of Meeker. The wedding will take place Dec. 19 in Meeker at St. James Episcopal Church.
n The undefeated Steamboat Sailors showed why they were ranked sixth in the state last Saturday as they passed and ran their way by the Cowboys to spoil their homecoming, 33-7.
n Leading this year’s homecoming parade was Meeker’s 1925 quarterback Mel Holland.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
n One of the finest bucks this week was taken on Douglas Creek by Marvin McPhail of Ashland, Kansas. The enormous head at 10 points on one side and seven on the other. Dressed out weight of the deer was around 140 pounds.
n Congressman Wayne Aspinall (D.-Colo.) is in Rangely and will speak at a luncheon from 12-1 p.m. at the Reddy Room in Eddy’s Cafe.
n Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Jantzen, former residents, were in town last weekend visiting relative sand attending to business matters. The Jantzens now live in Grand Junction.
n Paul Kenney and two friends from Fort Collins hunted in the Rangely area from Friday until Sunday. While here, he visited his mother, Mrs. Les Kenney.

Rangely Times — 35 years ago
n Karen Ruth Chambers and Gerald Meyer (Jay) Eubanks Jr. were married Oct. 8 in a double ring ceremony at First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore.
n Mr. and Mrs. Willard D. Buckmaster of Rangely announce the engagement of their daughter Leslie Jeanne to Bernerd Dale Rice, son of Mr. sand Mrs. Ivan Berryman of Garland, Wyo.
n Marcelyn Willis, ART (Accredited Records Technician), from the Rangely District Hospital, was elected secretary of the Western Colorado Medical Records Association at their fall meeting in Grand Junction.
n Rangely Panther quarterback Pat Newton will get his chance to direct the Panther’s offensive attack against the arch-rival Meeker Cowboys in what should be some very exciting and hard hitting high school football action.
n Mrs. Ruth Smith has sold the Dina-Freeze Drive In to Dennis and Dixie Sims.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
n Acting Police Chief Alan Pfeuffer was appointed Police Chief at the regular meeting of the Rangely Board of Trustees.
n Rio Blanco County has constructed a new municipal landfill for the community of Rangely.
n The citizens of Rangely are invited to help Meeker welcome Governor Roy Romer and his cabinet for a Colorado Dome on the Range Day.
n Gerry and Willa Kay Riebold announce the engagement of their daughter Kayla to Mike Justus, son of Dave and Jeanette Justus of Rangely.
