The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago

Lem Miller, who has been steward at the Meeker Hotel for several years, has resigned his position on account of poor health. He was succeeded by Mr. H.E. Low.

J.W. Sprague is now owner of Black King, the Lee Boner horse.

Simp Harp sold 10 head of shorthorn yearling heifers this week to Al Bills for $80 per head. This shows that it pays to raise good stuff.

The girls of the RBHS had a meeting Tuesday evening. They decided to form a Girls’ Athletic Association, and elected Mary Moulton for president, Jennie Brown for secretary, and Ethel Ball for treasurer.

Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Low were made the recipients of a fine boy Saturday. Dr. French in attendance.

Landlord Rube Ball of the Meeker Hotel was the recipient last week of a souvenir which he appreciated very highly. It was an elementary speller, such as were used in the days when Rube was young.

Mr. and Mrs. Clay Zenor announce the engagement of their daughter Miss Barbara Lucile to Cadet Wayne R. Baker, son of Mrs. Clara Baker of South Bend, Ind.

Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Ruckman, pioneers of this community, had a regular family reunion at their Meeker home the past week. Three of their daughters have been here visiting them and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Carrie Massie is here from Denver for spring vacation; Mrs. Maudie Childress came up from her home in Monte Vista; and Mrs. Jennie Stephenson is here from her home in Omaha, Neb.

Thirteen members of the Meeker Junior Rifle Club went to Montrose last weekend to take part in the Colorado Indoor Junior Championship matches. Shooters making the trip were Mary Ann McKean, Kimmy McKean, Rod Crawford, Sharon Crawford, Ray Bicknell, Gary Bicknell, Danny Ruehle, Randy Hale, Carig Ball, David Raley, Bill Keele, Wesley Keele and Lyle Layton.

Brandon Stewart, J.C. Watt and Lenny Klinglesmith participated in a freestyle wrestling tournament in Englewood last weekend.

The beautiful and historical St. James’ Episcopal Church of Meeker was the setting for the candlelight wedding of Carey Anne Hughes and 1st Lt. Anthony John Seely performed Dec. 19. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hughes and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Seely, all of Meeker.

Mr. and Mrs. John “Jay” Orris of Meeker are proud to announce the engagement and forthcoming wedding of their son, Joseph Michael, to Sandy Elizabeth Chavez of Ventura, Calif.

At the District 11 4-H meeting in Rifle, Carla Seely was elected the new president and and Kerry Conrado vice president of the district for the coming year.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago

The Rio Blanco annual spelling bee, directed by Mrs. Dorothy Barrett, county superintendent of schools, was held April 5. George Mobley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Mobley, of Rangely won the seventh- and eighth-grade elimination contest and will be awarded a free trip to Denver to compete in the state spelling bee. Tommy Steen of Meeker and Stanley Fullenwider of Rangely captured second and third places, respectively, in the junior high division. Stanley Fullenwider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Fullenwider, won the oral spelling contest.

Rear Admiral Howard A. Yaeger relieved Rear Admiral Ira H. Nunn on March 30 as Commandant of the 9th Naval District with headquarters at Great Lakes, Ill.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Steele and two children, Carol and Larry, attended the LDS General Conference held in the Tabernacle on the Temple grounds in Salt Lake City.

Rangely Times — 40 years ago

Dennis Perry of Western United, Ohio, and a student at CNCC, signed a professional baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

At the March 27 meeting of the Rangely Town Council, a hearing was held for use of town streets and alleys for access routes in and out of town by snowmobile and other recreational vehicles.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago

Lonnie Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darryle Baker, has been selected to receive honorary award recognition by having her achievements published in the National Dean’s List for 19892-83.

Miss Julie Lollar, 17, daughter of Cecil E. Lollar of Rangely and Marlene Lollar of Fruita, has been selected as a state finalist in the 1983 Colorado National Teenager Pageant to be held at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Pat and Kim Harris of Rangely announce the birth of their son Matthew Patrick Harris (Matt).

The Rangely High School girls’ track team is heading off to a great start this year. The team earned a third-place finish at their first meet of the season. The team traveled to the Grand Junction Tiger Invitational, where they competed against A, AA, and AAA teams.

Mark Wilczek, at 140 pounds, was the only Rangely middle school wrestler to capture first at the annual wrestling tournament held in Steamboat Springs. Other wrestlers coming away with medals were Wayne Andersen, second; Brett Powell, third; Fred Drake, second; Brian Sisneros, second; Dan Cogswell, third; and Matt Vaughn, second.

Carl Peters crooned his way to the grand prize of the annual community talent show, sponsored by the FHA. Some of the other winners were Candy Wall, 10-13 year old winner; Casey Wilder, Brad White, Rebob Russell and Carl “Bo” Fellows, first prize; Blair and Joyce Hacker, below 10 and third prize; Dondi Osborn, second prize; and Stormy Tomlinson, third prize.
