Rangely’s Hurricanes swim well in Aspen meet

RANGELY I Nine Rangely Hurricanes swam in Aspen on Saturday and Sunday and finished in the middle of the field as a team but returned with two individual high-point trophies.
“Our team finished fifth out of 10 teams,” coach Matt Scoggins said of his team’s performance. “Our kids are very competitive and represent our communities well.”
Andrew Morton swam in eight events and finished in the top three in each, including three wins in the 15-and-over age group.

Andrew Morton won the high-point trophy in the 15-and-older division, placing in the top three of all eight events he swam in, including three individual wins.
Patrick Scoggins also won a high point-trophy for the Hurricanes. Scoggins won all nine events he swam in, including the 500 freestyle, and he also set the pool record in the 100 breast stroke in his age division.
The meet was the first meet in four years for Meeker’s Stephany Joos to swim as a Hurricane.

Travis Coates swam in nine events and won the 500 meter freestyle race in the 10-and-under age group and Meeker’s Stephany Joos swam competitively again for the Hurricanes after a four-year hiatus, according to her coach.
William, the oldest Scoggins sibling, swam Saturday, then got up Sunday at 5 a.m. to drive to Glenwood Springs to race in the Strawberry Short Cut 10K, where he placed third, then returned to swim in Aspen on Sunday afternoon.
James, Mary and Timothy Scoggins also swam in Aspen, as did Austin Ficken, to round out the Hurricane team.
The Hurricanes will swim in Craig on Saturday and Sunday.
