RANGELY I Nineteen pairs entered the annual Couples Golf Tournament at Cedar Ridges Golf Course, and local golfers fared well in the two flights of the two-day event.
“The tournament went well,” golf course manager Chris Hejl said. “We had a lot of repeat players, all the players who played this year have played in years past.”
The tournament was played using the Chapman format, where each team member tees off, players hit their teammate’s drive and then they pick the best ball, alternating shots until the ball is put into the cup.
Locals Rick and Ann Brady were the best golfers in the second flight, winning the tournament with a gross score of 175.
The Bradys led after the first day, shooting an 87 on the first 18. They added a stroke on Sunday to finish 10 shots ahead of John and Angela Doane of Craig, who finished second.
Rangely’s Ryan and Cori Elam had the best net score (129) in the second flight, five shots ahead of Jeff and Yvonne Otto.
In the championship flight, Roger and Taylor Walters were the best golfers.
The couple from Rifle led Rangely’s Clark Edwards and Ellen Boudreaux after the first 18 holes by four shots.
They extended the lead by three more to shoot a 140, seven strokes ahead of Edwards and Boudreaux, who finished second.
Brandon Halcomb and Linda Gordon finished with the best net score (127) in the championship flight, giving Levi and Mary Smuin of Vernal, Utah, second place, five strokes back.
Hejl said the golfers in each flight also played in a shootout, where all teams in each flight tee off, alternate shots and eliminate the highest scores on each hole until only one team in each flight is left. Edwards and Boudreaux won the championship flight shootout and the Ottos won the second flight.
The next tournament at Cedar Ridges Golf Course will be the Men’s Club Championship, played Aug. 24-25, followed by the CNCC Rodeo Scramble on Aug. 31.
