Members of the Meeker School Board approved Kris Casey’s resignation as high school track coach Monday. In addition to being the Barone Middle School history teacher, Casey is reportedly taking on other responsibilities and needed to free up time. Last season more than 60 high school students participated in the track program.
The board discussed bids for a greenhouse to be constructed at Meeker High School. Part of the original design for the new school, the greenhouse component has yet to be added. The board approved a capital reserve expenditure for up to $80,000 — which would be the worst case scenario, according to Superintendent Chris Selle — for a stick-built 20×30-foot greenhouse that staff believes would be sturdier than a greenhouse kit. Principal Amy Chinn said the school already has some greenhouse components to be included, such as a hydroponic system and a heater. Selle said it’s unlikely the greenhouse will be ready in time for the spring 2023 season.
Contracts for HVAC work to be done at Barone Middle School were approved, along with approval of a “pass through” of $11,500 for work completed at the new Admin Building playground. A dedication of the playground, for which the Meeker Lions Club raised funds, purchased and installed equipment, is anticipated this spring.
The board also discussed the possibility of financial compensation for Selle, who is serving as both superintendent and elementary school principal. Selle has not asked for additional pay. Board members agreed to continue the conversation in the future.
