RANGELY I Clark Edwards shot a three-under-par 69 to win the championship flight of the Rangely Open, a stroke-play tournament held Saturday at Cedar Ridges Golf Course, where 35 golfers played in three competitive flights. Edwards beat Vernal’s Rafe Johnston by three shots and Kendall Goodwin by five to win the 18-hole tournament sponsored by Praters Plumbing and Heating.
Tieg Hauer of Rifle had the best net score (68) in the championship flight and Orlin Teveapont of Roosevelt, Utah finished with the second best, 70, six ahead of Blake Murray, who finished third.
Former Rio Blanco County resident Dennis Rohn, who now lives in Vernal, won the second flight with a seven-over-par, 79, and Rangely’s Terry Richardson finished second, one shot back. Roosevelt’s Colin Mojado had the third best gross score (84) and Alfred Checora had the best net score (67) in the second flight. Mark Neumeier had the second best net score (71) and Bryan MacKay, finished third, one shot back.
Rangely’s Jason Cox won the third flight with a gross score of 85 and Rohn’s youngest son, Tristan, placed second, one stroke behind Cox. Emmet Duncan finished third in the third flight, shooting a 91.
Rangely’s Rob Morgan won the net side in the third flight with a 66, four shots ahead of James Maybury while Larry Ungaro was third, five behind the leader.
“It was a well played competitive tournament,” manager Chris Hejl said. Hejl said a Shootout followed and the winners were Johnston, Dennis Rohn and Meeker’s Willy Theos. The 27-hole, two-man will be played Saturday at Cedar Ridges, where golfers will scramble the first nine holes, score the best ball during the second nine and alternate shots on the final turn.
