Smokey the Bear made a day-long appearance at the event on Saturday afternoon, making the rounds greeting children, U.S Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management employees as well as local residents. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964.

He is seen here helping the kids learn to stamp patterns onto leather.The Bureau of Land Management, which has the White River Field Office in Meeker, had a wilderness display on hand for the “50 Years Wild” celebration on the county courthouse lawn Saturday in Meeker. The display addressed area wilderness study areas, including Skull Creek, Black Mountain, Oil Spring Mountain, Bull Canyon, Willow Creek and Windy Gulch.Entertainment was provided by Hotter ‘N Grits out of Winter Park on Saturday during the 50th Years of Wilderness celebration on the courthouse lawn in Meeker. The ERBM Parks and Recreation District sponsored the group, which had a couple hundred people enjoying the late afternoon sunshine.
