MEEKER | Pioneers Medical Center’s Stepping On program recently concluded its first fall prevention class of the year with great success! Falls pose a serious risk for older adults, impacting 1 in 4 seniors annually. Thankfully, falls can be prevented, and Stepping On is a proven initiative that reduces falls by 31%.
The Stepping On program was taught by Brittany Smith, OTD, OTR/L, and Sarah Sharp, COTA R/L, from the hospital’s Rehabilitation Department. The program included strengthening and balance exercises and covered crucial fall prevention strategies topics:
● Fall Histories: Participants discussed their fall experiences and strategies to manage fear of falling.
● Home Fall Hazards: Guidance was provided on identifying and addressing home hazards, like poor lighting and clutter, to enhance safety at home and in the community.
● Daily Life Adaptations: Participants learned how to adjust daily routines, considering factors like osteoporosis, vision changes, and hearing loss.
● Proper Footwear and Mobility Aids: For better stability, education was provided on choosing the right shoes and using mobility aids, such as canes and walkers.
● Medication Management and Wellness: The program emphasized the importance of sleep, nutrition, and medication management for overall health.
● Fall Response Techniques: Participants learned how to get up safely after a fall and use fall alert systems.
● Effective Communication: The program empowered participants to communicate health concerns effectively with doctors and first responders.
“We had a blast with all the Stepping On participants! These individuals have made incredible strides in improving their balance and fall prevention skills and have each worked hard to meet their goals. Hopefully, they feel accomplished with their new foundations of strength, confidence, balance, and safety as they continue to decrease their risk of falls with knowledge gained in the program,” said Brittany Smith.
The class had nine enthusiastic participants who met for two hours weekly at the Meeker Library for seven weeks.
“We are grateful for the Meeker Library for allowing us to use their space and the hospital for providing the monetary and resource support for the program, such as the manuals, transportation, and snacks. This allowed the program to be free for all participants,” said Sarah Sharp.
Our graduates have shown great dedication to improving their balance and strength. Due to high demand, we’re offering another Stepping On class this fall. The class has a capacity of 16 participants, and nine people are already on the waiting list.
