I missed Tuesday’s dramatic display of the Northern Lights and was hopeful for a repeat performance on my way home with the papers late Wednesday, but, alas… nature did not cooperate. The closest I got to flashing lights were the two deer vs. car incidents on Hwy. 13 with their hazard lights on.
If you’ve asked yourself if we’ve ever seen the Aurora Borealis this far south in Colorado before, we have. Most recently in 2024, then in 2003. Before that, there are reports in the Rocky Mountain News and Rocky Mountain Gold Reporter of a celestial event that lit up the Colorado sky so bright “you could read a newspaper by it.” NASA published a comprehensive report in 2005 of the “Great Auroral Storm of 1859.”
As the saying goes, there’s nothing new under the sun, but it’s still pretty cool to witness these rare events in real-time without having to travel to the Arctic!
On to the news (and GO COWBOYS!)…
