Rangely golfers get even, win RBC Cup back by large margin

After two years of bowing to Meeker golfers, Rangely golfers earned their revenge in a big way, dominating the two-day Rio Blanco Cup Tournament at Cedar Ridges Golf Course in Rangely on Saturday and Sunday. Last year, Meeker just slipped past Rangely for the win, but Rangely dominated them from the beginning this year.
RANGELY I “It was about time we won again,” Robby Elam said after golfers from Rangely, playing on their home course, won the Rio Blanco County Cup back from Meeker, where it has been the past two years.

The Rio Blanco County Cup is a traveling trophy where golfers from Rangely and Meeker match up and play three different formats during the two-day event which alternates courses each year. Last year Meeker won by a half-point but this year Rangely dominated both days and won 36.5–21.5.
“Meeker got off to a slow start on Saturday, as Rangely built a lead that gave them quite an advantage, heading into Sunday,” Bryce Ducey, Meeker’s team captain said. “It was still a lot of fun, the Rangely men’s and women’s clubs did an outstanding job with all the food and of course, showing us all a good time. We look forward to our annual match next year in Meeker.”
The first nine holes are played in a two-person scramble format and a point is given to the team which wins the most holes, then another point can be earned on the second nine, which is played in a best ball format.
Rangely players scored 9.5 points to Meeker’s 4.5 after the first nine and scored the exact same amount of points after the second; giving Rangely a 19-9 lead after the first day. Sunday was match play and Rangely easily won the Cup back, outscoring Meeker 19.5–12.5 on the second day.
“I want to thank Meeker for bringing so many players over to play, we had 58 golfers on the course,” Elam, Rangely’s team captain said. “I had to put up with (Pat) Walsh for two days but I also got to meet some new people. I enjoy this tournament more than any other and I can’t wait until next year.”
