Rangely track teams begin; boys 8th, girls 17th

RANGELY I With cold winds, partly cloudy and not overly warm, the Rangely High School track and field teams had their first meet of the year on Friday in Rifle against 21 other teams.

The boys’ and girls’ teams captured eighth place overall while the girls finished in 17th place. Of the 30 members of the two track teams, 23 of the boys and girls competed while the other seven were off for the start of spring break.
The senior boys did an excellent job of getting personal bests and working hard during the meet. Discus thrower Chance Sheppard placed 13th in discus with of a throw of 105 feet, 11 inches, also placing 22nd in shot put with a throw of 34-3 1/2.
Daniel Connor was able to get a personal best in the 1,600- and 800-meter runs. He turned in a 6 minute, 50 second time in the 1,600, taking 18 seconds off his best time, then he took another 3 seconds off his 800 meters with a time of 2:36.
Kaulan Brady placed sixth in the high jump with a jump of 5-10, 12th in the long jump with a 18-4 1/4 and ran the 100-meter dash, finishing in ninth place with a time of 12.17.
Four juniors competed in the meet, three girls and one boy. Mikayla Filfred threw the shot put 22-11 for 28th place, Savannah Nielsen ran the 1,600 in a time of 6:43 and placed 28th.
Lindzey Thacker turned in personal bests in the high jump and long jump. In high jump, she jumped 4-8 and she placed 20th with a jump of 13-9 in the long jump. Troy Allred long and triple jumped as well as ran the 100 dash. In long jump, he turned in a personal best with a jump of 17-9. In triple jump, he placed 16th with a jump of 34-9 1/2 and 18th in the 100 with a time of 12.42.
The sophomore class had five athletes competing, two girls and three boys.
Katelyn Brown finished in sixth place in the long jump for a personal record of 14-10 and she also placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 30-9 1/2.
Miekka Peck placed 20th in shot put with a throw of 24-1 1/4. Cameron Filfred threw both the discus and shot put. In discus, he threw 52-11 and shot put 24-2.
Brennan Noyes was the only Panther at the track and field meet to earn a first place, that came in the high jump when he cleared 5-10. He followed that up with a third-place finish in the triple jump with a personal best of 39-7.
Patrick Scoggins was able to bring home a second-place finish in the 400-meter with a time of 50.88, which is not only a personal best but also a school record. He also ran the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.96, placing him third.
The freshman class was also well represented with three girls and one boy.
“(These athletes) have a lot of potential if they keep working hard during the season,” Panther coach Beth Scoggins said. “I am very pleased with their results at the meet.”
Makenze Cochrane threw the discus 79-5 1/2 for 11th place, Breanna Davis placed 13th in shot put with a throw of 26-3 1/2. Phalon Osborn ran the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.24, placing 21st.
Aspen Rhea was busy running the 100 and 200 dashes while also doing the long jump. In the 100, she placed 25th with a time of 14.84, in the 200 she placed 20th with 32.06. In long jump she placed 14th with a jump of 14-25. Marshall Webber ran both hurdle events: in the 110 he ran 21.71 placing 20th, and in the 300 he ran a 52.21 and placed 22nd.
“We were able to put three relays together in the girls’ sprint medley, the girls’ 4×200 meter, and boys’ 4×400,” Scoggins said.
The sprint medley was made up of Makenze Cochrane, Talyn Peck, Miekka Peck and Savannah Nielsen, who finished 11th with a time of 2:25.33. Aspen Rhea, Phalon Osborn, Lindzey Thacker and Katelyn Brown ran the 4×200 meters, placing fifth with a time of 1:59.64.
The boys’ 4×400 quartet was made up of Marshall Webber, Daniel Connor, Brennan Noyes and Patrick Scoggins, who were able to turn in a time of 4:15.11, placing 11th.
The track and field team will be in Hotchkiss on Saturday.
