RANGELY | For the last 42 years—since Bill Hume has owned Rangely’s grocery and feed store—Nichols Store has been open on Thanksgiving.
But this year, the store will be closed on Thursday. And Friday and Saturday.
For one of Rangely’s hardest-working citizens, that’s quite a change of pace.
Hume was born and raised in Rangely, Colo. He started working at Nichols Store 50 years ago, in 1966, as a teenager. He was graduated from Rangely High School in 1970.
He served two years in the Army during the Vietnam War. While stationed in Hawaii, Bill was a Specialty 4th Class, 25th Infantry, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Soldier and was trained in scuba diving and butchering.
In 1974 Bill and his brother John Hume purchased the business from Bernie Stevenson. John sold his share of the business to Bill a year and a half later. Bill sold groceries, feed and butchered locally raised beef. In 1981 Bill started Hume Distributing, delivering Deep Rock water, ice and Meadow Gold dairy products.
Between his multiple jobs, Hume gives to RBC 4-H and FFA and serves on various community boards. His work ethic is something to be admired.
“He never even closes on Thanksgiving Thursday, so for him to take three days off is pretty amazing,” said his wife Julie.
The Humes would like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.
In return, their friends, neighbors and customers send their best wishes to the Humes for a relaxing, enjoyable and well-deserved Thanksgiving vacation.
