Multiple opportunities available to serve on commissioner-appointed boards

RBC | Of the 18 boards and commissions appointed by the Rio Blanco County Board of Commissioners, 13 have vacancies. The following is a list of the boards, what they do, when they meet and who is eligible to serve. Board-related expenses, such as for travel between Meeker and Rangely, are reimbursed. Some of the open seats have been vacant for more than a year.

Building Board of Appeals: This is a new board, to be composed of three members and one alternate who are licensed professional engineers and/or architects, building contractors, superintendents of building construction or other individuals qualified by experience and/or training to evaluate matters pertaining to building construction. This board will operate as a “Board of Review” and will meet as needed.

Council on Aging Board: The Council on Aging Board is established under the Older Americans Act to help those aged 60 and over in the communities. This board helps plan, coordinate and determine needed services for older adults in Rio Blanco County. Board members must be 60 or older. This board has three delegates and alternates serving one-year term. This year there will be two delegates from Rangely and one from Meeker, and one alternate from each town.

Citizens Review Panel: This panel is for conflict resolution related to grievances with the human services department. Panel members must be representative of the community, have demonstrable personal experience with children, and not be employees or agents of the state department or any county department. At least one member of the panel shall be the parent of a minor child at the time of service. This panel has no term limits or set number of people. There are four members currently.

Columbine Park Board: There are two open seats on this five-member board, which makes recommendations regarding the facilities at Columbine Park in Rangely.

Fair Board: Members of this 11-person board serve three-year terms, recommending policy and making decisions about the county fair. Board meetings are typically the last Thursday of the month, alternating between Meeker and Rangely. Four seats are open on this board.

Fairgrounds Management Board: The members of this board make recommendations to the facilities director and county commissioners regarding the needs of the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds. The six-member board includes one member from ERBM and one from the town of Meeker. There is one seat open. Meetings are held as needed.

Historic Preservation Board: A five-member board whose purpose is to protect and preserve the county’s historic and cultural heritage. One seat is open. Meetings are held as needed.

Lodging Tax Board: There are two three-member boards, one in Meeker and one in Rangely. Members should be involved with the tourism industry in some way. The board uses the Lodging Tax Tourism Fund to advertise and market tourism for the area represented. There are two seats open in Meeker and one in Rangely. Meetings are held as needed.

Meeker Colorado Civic Improvement Corp. Board: This three-member board oversees the Rio Blanco Fairfield Apartments. One seat is open. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Fairfield Center.

Library Boards (one in Meeker, one in Rangely): Meetings of these five-member boards are held on the last Monday of each month in Meeker. Rangely’s meetings are on the second Monday of each month. The boards provide management and control of the Library Districts they represent. Rangely has one seat open. Meeker’s open position is the joint seat appointed by the BOCC and the Town of Meeker together.

Weed Management Board: Members of this 10-person board provide advice on weed management and make recommendations for the Rio Blanco County Undesirable Plant Management Plan. Preferred members would be resident landowners or lessees with practical knowledge of weed control. Three seats are open. Meetings are held as needed.

Planning Commission: The Planning Commission makes recommendations concerning applications or land use discussions. Meetings are the second and fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Two seats are open. Planning Commission members receive $50 per meeting.
