RANGELY | After winning the consolation championship in the 132-pound bracket at the Region 1 tournament held last weekend in Delta, sophomore Tytus Coombs will represent Rangely in the “Big Show,” also know as the Colorado State Wrestling Championships, which start today in the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver.
Along with Coombs, the Panthers were also represented by freshman Anthony Garner at 120 and sophomore Dalton Dembowski at 195 in the regional tournament, but the latter two did not place.
“Anthony and Dalton are just simply missing mat time, they don’t have the experience their opponents have,” Rangely first-year head coach J.C. Chumacero said. “These two battled all year for me and never gave up. I will get two more years with Dalton and three more with Anthony. Their success will come if they continue to work as hard as they did for me this year.”
Coombs has also worked hard this year and it paid off for the young Panther, who lost in the semifinals but came back to defeat Meeker senior Garrett Frantz to advance to the consolation championship match, where he wrestled a smart match to defeat Paonia’s Caden Meilner 6-3, punching his ticket to the “Big Show.”
“I’m very proud of Tytus for making it our of our region and into the “Big Show,” Coach Chumacero said. “Any fan of wrestling knows how hard our region is every year. That being said, Tytus has high expectations of himself to go over and do well in the Pepsi Center and I know he can accomplish his goals.
The first round of the 2A Colorado State Wrestling Championships start today at 3 p.m., and Coombs will enter the “Big Show” with a 25-5 record.
