The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

– Trot out your candidates for mayor and alderman.

– Snow is almost all gone in this section; and, unlike in other seasons, it didn’t run off into the river. It went into the frost-free ground.

– Tom Ruckman of the Park, looked the town people over, Thursday.

– Whereas complaint has been made before the Board of Trustees, that the brick public school building of School District No. 1, situated in the town of Meeker, is in an unsafe condition and whereas the School Board of said District No. 1, admit the unsafe condition and whereas there is a popular demand that said building be condemned and taken down.

– The use of tobacco by our troops in the trenches plays no small part in the conservation of food, say Marine Corps officials here, who estimate that from 25 to 40 percent of food is saved daily in this manner. While the authorities admit the detrimental influence of narcotics, they assert that tobacco relieves the nervous tension of soldiers who are under continual shell fire.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

– An attempted burglary of the First National Bank of Meeker was thwarted around midnight last nights, Wednesday. The out-of-town suspect was taken into custody and placed in county jail.

– M.A. “Dusty” Rhodes, local angler, went fishing Sunday, and after he caught a 24-inch Brown, decided he couldn’t do much better that day.

– Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Joslin are the proud parents of an 8 lb., 5-1/2 oz. baby girl born at Pioneers Hospital, Sunday, March 3 at 7:13 a.m. They have named her Dena Ann.

– Brick by brick the old Colorow Hotel is coming down. Built more than 60 years ago by Mr. and Mrs. John Davitt, the old landmark was recently purchased by Independent Lumber Co., who will use the land for an extension of their lumber yard facilities on Main Street.

– The MHS girls’ basketball team will go to state, but without the company of the boys’ team. The Cowgirls advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals after a 53-49 win at Eaton on Friday, while the Cowboys suffered a heartbreaking 68-65 loss to Salida on Saturday in front of a sold-out home crowd.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago

– Walter Deacon, 58, a local rancher, was found dead early Wednesday morning by searchers in the Waterhole Canyon area sough of Rangely. He had been missing since late Tuesday. Cause of death was unknown but a heart attack was indicated.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

– The Rangely Panther girls’ team is statebound after their win this past Saturday. RHS seniors Rosa Lopez, Jamie Kurrasch, Jennifer Filener and Cori Ducey will head to the state tournament for the last games as Panthers.

– “People, the raw material from which pilots are made, are still the most inexpensive, nonlinear, all purpose computing system capable of being mass produced by unskilled labor. They’re also the hardest to program.” ~Mr. Andrews of the Rangely Aerospace Department.

– The Rangely Town Council denied a claim by Gamble’s for $511.50 for paint frozen during the extreme cold weather. Owner Ray Carnes said that about 103 gallons of paint were damaged because of improper pressure on the gas meter, which caused the furnace in his store to go out.
