The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

The man who has a fine head of hair is careless about parting it. But the man who has only eight hairs left never fails to get four on one side of the part and four on the other side.

– Weather conditions were of the changeable variety during the past week. The change from the springlike grade we had set in last Friday evening with snow and a blizzard. More or less sunshine followed till Wednesday morning, when a couple of inches of snow fell. This was followed by a drop of the mercury and frosty nights. But—sunshine is now on tap.

– Pursuant to notice a goodly gathering of citizens assembled at the City Hall Tuesday evening and placed in nomination the following citizens, to be voted for at the coming town election: For mayor—W.D. Simms. For councilmen—J.E. Rooney, F.N. JoHantgen and L.L. Offerle, for two-year terms, and C.T. Gwynne for one year term.

– Meeker’s Volunteer Fire Department held its annual dinner at Elbert Hall on Monday evening of this week. Frank Cooley paid tribute to the long years of service of Chief Stan Harp and then in a most fitting matter, presented him with a gift from the department.

– Supt. Bob King commented this is the first time for a number of years that the students have had a spring vacation. In the past, a few days’ vacation has been allowed at Easter time.

– “I can’t even imagine what kind of person would do something like that, especially to a VFW,” lamented Georgia Skidmore, the morning after Bud’s Bar received a bomb threat.

– The Meeker Cowgirls’ visit to the state tournament in Denver last week was brief, but long enough to prove they were a team to be taken seriously. The Cowgirls proved they were no pushovers last Thursday, but fell to the Crusaders 47-59.

– Nine petitions were filed in the clerk’s office by the deadline, March 8, for the offices of trustee and one petition for the office of mayor. Trustee petitions were turned in for incumbents Charles Cary, Don Chism and Don Rooks. Other petitions included those of Harold Eddy, Howard Elam, Glenn Harper, Troy A. Pollard, Jon R. Toles and J.S. Warner. Mayor Bernard Yaeger is unopposed for re-election as mayor.

– There is some medical evidence that wrinkles are hereditary, and it may be that parents inherit them from their children.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

– The annual “Jump Rope for Heart” is a thing of the past. More than 40 students at Parkview Elementary jumped rope on March 4 after school to promote their cardiovascular fitness and to raise money for the American Heart Association. The children had fun and also raised $1,300.

– Rangely girls take third place at state—again.

– The fifth Rowdy Worm is again being planned as is just around the corner.
