– Commissioner-elect Oldland was in county seat on private business yesterday. Mr. Oldland has in contemplation various improvements on his store and residence.

– The cost of the late election in Rio Blanco County in round numbers was $600—just double what it cost under the old law. Of course, this does not include the expenses of the various candidates, which also foots up to a snug sum.

– A large delegation of Utes paid a visit to White River City during the week. The country around the head of Yellow, Spring and Douglas creeks has been the scene of their operations for a few weeks past, an their slaughter of game for the hides has been terrible. Another party, said to number 500 (Uintahs) have cleaned out all the game on the north side of the White from Coyote basin down, and in the meantime the bloody war against the Indians and white hide-hunters goes bravely on from the ninth floor of the Equitable building, Denver.

– Phillips Petroleum Company’s tax assessment will either be a $300,000 windfall to the county, or it could simply vaporize as it had once done in the past; that is, until Rio Blanco County Assessor Renae Neilson discovered it.

– Wasn’t it nice to know that because of the abundant supply of gasoline during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend prices dropped a cent and a half a gallon; bringing the average cost to a $1.15 per gallon everywhere, except here—on the western slope—where a gallon of gas averages about $1.30 a gallon, and the average driving distance between destinations is about five times greater.
