RANGELY I Of the five players on the Rangely High School golf team, three are left-handed.
That’s a challenge from an instructional standpoint, especially if the one doing the instructing is right-handed.
“They sure are hard to instruct,” said Simon Boudreaux, who, along with his wife, Ellen, coaches the RHS golf team. “It’s that mirror effect.”
While the team has its share of lefties, they are headed in the right direction.
“We’ve got a guy or two who can play, and the other guys are learning,” Simon Boudreaux said. “They’re really trying hard.”
Simon and Ellen Boudreaux volunteered for the coaching job.
“We’ve been doing it for four years, my wife and I,” Simon Boudreaux said. “We’d do it for nothing.”
Which is what they do. The team doesn’t receive school funding.
“Our golf team is supported by local businesses,” Simon Boudreaux said. “They’ve been great.”
As an example, he mentioned the Western Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District, which provides members of the RHS team with free access to range balls and the golf course.
The Rangely golf team has played eight tournaments already this season, and will play a total of 10.
“They need to have an average of 90 to go to the regional at Haymaker (Golf Course in Steamboat Springs),” Simon Boudreaux said.
Members of the team are senior Eric Sisneros, junior Kacey Denny, sophomore Riley Way and freshmen Chris Staley and Dillon McTague.
Rangely will host the Panther Invitational tournament Sept. 16, which will include players from rival Meeker.
“We usually have one home tournament,” Simon Boudreaux said. “We’re a 2A school, but we’re a small 2A. We just don’t have the draw.”
But they do have three lefties.
