Eight Panthers qualify for state meet

RANGELY I The Rangely Panther Track and Field team finished its regular season this weekend at the Cardinal Invitational in Parachute, Colorado. For eight of the athletes competing this weekend, the goal was to fine tune the events before heading to state, while the others were trying to improve their marks one more time.

The Panthers will take eight athletes to state this year: four seniors, one junior, one sophomore and two freshmen. The seniors will be represented by Riley Boydstun in both throwing events, Makenze Cochrane in both throwing events, Breanna Davis in the shot put and Marshall Webber in the 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles. Junior Hannah Wilkie will run the 800-meter, 1,600-meter, sprint medley and 4×400. Sophomore Dixie Rhea will run the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, sprint medley and 4×400. Freshman Chloe Goshe will run on the sprint medley and 4×400 relay teams. Mary Scoggins will triple jump, sprint medley and 4×400 relay. These eight athletes will start competition on Thursday, May 15 at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood, Colorado.
Two of the athletes—freshmen Angelina Peck and Timothy Scoggins—had the opportunity to pole vault one more time Friday. Peck cleared 6-7 for a new school record. Scoggins wasn’t able to clear the bar but has improved a lot.
On Saturday, freshmen Brent Cantrell threw both shot and discus for distances of 49-4 and 19-8.5. Brooke Filfred threw for distances of 66-11.25 and 24-10.5. Peck long, triple jumped and ran the 100-meter dash. She ended the year with a new personal best in triple with a jump of 26-8. For Timothy Scoggins, this was an all jumps meet as he pole vaulted, high jumped, long jumped and triple jumped. He took fifth in high and squeezed into finals in triple taking ninth overall. Norrah Patch ran the 1,600 and improved her time by more than 20 seconds for a new personal best of 8:24.47.
For the juniors, Audrey Patch had a great meet. She got two new personal bests: in the 100 and 200 dash. Chloe Filfred also got two new personal bests in the 1,600 and 800 runs. “
It is fun to watch these two drop time throughout the season, both are working hard at getting better and will be good leaders for the team next year,” said head coach Beth Scoggins.
The Panthers left Wednesday to compete in the state meet that starts today, May 16.
