MEEKER | Town of Meeker trustees opened two proposals for recycling at their Oct. 1 meeting, one from Eagle River Waste and one from Overton Recycling. Both proposals will remove recycling from the Third Street location to the respective locations of whichever entity is chosen.
The Eagle River proposal would include plastics, glass, paper, cardboard, aluminum and tin cans, and metals for $1,800 a month. Electronic waste would be $0.75/pound, and appliances with refrigerants would be $30 each. The Overton proposal would be for cardboard, paper and aluminum cans for $36,000 per year. The trustees will review the proposals and revisit the item on an upcoming agenda.
Town Manager Lisa Cook said town staff has been working on pricing and options for improvements to the town’s Third Street property, and she has spoken to ERBM executive director Sean VonRoenn about ways to improve river access at the site. Trustees agreed to a tentative workshop Oct. 29 to discuss options.
Cook shared information from the Associated Governments of Northwest Colorado economic development summit with the board, including a study regarding innovated coal-derived products for counties impacted by coal mining losses. “What else can we use coal for besides energy production?”
Cook also said an economist’s presentation about population growth in the next 10 years has Rio Blanco County “stagnant,” but shows dramatic increases in Garfield and Mesa counties.
Another presentation of interest was related to location-neutral job opportunities. According to flexjobs.com, there are 5,205 companies currently hiring remote workers.
