Sheep men in the northwestern part of Routt County are considerably stirred up over the recent theft of 3,000 head of sheep belonging to Griff Edwards. It seems that Jack McCarthy, Edwards’ foreman, is the guilty party. As foreman, he ordered one J.W. McLean, a herder, to drive the sheep to Rifle for shipment, from which point McCarthy shipped the sheep to Kansas City, sod them and pocketed the proceeds, amounting to between $5,000 and $6,000. Mr. Edwards is now east trying to recover his sheep or the money.

All arrangements for building the proposed railroad into Uintah Basin are completed and everything is ready to start construction work in the coming spring.

Good progress was made, past week, on the Neal-Pauls block, despite bad weather. Most of the plate glass windows are now in.

The public school is wrongly organized when its main object is to fit for college. It should benefit the many rather than the few.

Wright Ball and Miss Estelle Calvin slipped out to Grand Junction last Friday and were quietly married at that place the following day.

Times have changed. In the good old days when a boy became 18 or 19 years old he hit out for himself and the girls got married and looked after their own homes. All the old man had to do was to accumulate enough to retire on and loaf around the stores and livery barns. But nowadays dad has to keep going on high. There are the boys to set up in business and the girls are apt to lug in a husband and a few kids for the old man to provide automobiles for. And the old cuss can’t even go on a strike.

Alvy L. Tucker was installed as Worshipful Master of Rangely Lodge No. 175 of AF&AM.

Each month the forces favoring legalization of marijuana talk louder and louder. Newspapers and magazines are full of quotations from this and that “expert” who claims that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol and that all our problems would be solved if “Prohibition” (existing laws) was abolished. How does marijuana harm society? Since a person using it has a strong desire not to stand alone against the express rules of society, he constantly attempts to influence others to share his position. There is great exhilaration in joining a band of “missionary outlaws” who are convinced that their psychic revolution will bring about the betterment of man. In their own view, they may feel they are “getting out of the rat race” and closer to reality. They believe that they belong to a superior order of human beings. Kids who get high repeatedly don’t want to come down. They find a world where seemingly they have no problems and they become social bums. They turn the whole pot scene into a protest tool which they use to mock them middle-class culture they disdain.

Everything in the modern home is controlled by switches except the children.

An annual problem around the holidays is vandals taking decorations from people’s yards. Chief of Police Jerry Reese said this isn’t the only time of the year that such acts occur, as many people find their yards targeted at Halloween as well.

Along with the new year, January 1995 will see the arrival of a new physician in our community as Dr. Henry Kiang joins the staff of Rangely District Hospital.
