The first continuous oil shale retort of commercial size ever operated in the United States was started on Tuesday on the property of the Continental Oil and Shale Mining and Refining company on Piceance Creek, about two and a half miles from Rio Blanco.

People in this community were surprised when they read the brief item in last week’s Herald to the effect that the high school building had been declared unsafe. It seems an inspector from the state labor commissioner’s office came in; made a quiet inspection; went back to Denver; sent a communication to C.T. Gwynne (treasurer of the board) in which the inspector condemned the building as unsafe.

Wednesday, the 17th of December, has come and gone and the world did not come to an end as predicted by that wise philosopher, Colonel Jason Pepper. We have always taken considerable stock in the Colonel’s sayings, but must now admit that his stock has fallen considerably. However, he did throw quite a scare into the ranks of the un-Godly.
