Mayor, 3 trustee seats open

MEEKER | The first meeting of the new year for Meeker’s board of trustees was brief. Trustees approved a request to relocate Blanco Cellars’ retail liquor store permit to 317 E. Market St., Suite 3-A (just east of Watt’s Ranch Market) and approved a liquor license tavern renewal for Hops & Grapes at 723 Market St. Trustees also moved to appoint Diane Rapp to the library board.

Mayor Regas Halandras, in his last stretch of meetings before the coming election, said he’s been encouraging people to pick up applications to run for open seats on the board, including his own. Trustees Wendy Gutierrez, Travis Day and Melissa Kindall are up for reelection, and Halandras is term-limited.

Petitions for nomination are available at Town Hall and must be returned by Jan. 27, according to Town Clerk Amy Tupy. Each petition requires a minimum of 10 signatures. “I encourage you to get more than 10 because they’re not always validated,” she said.

Town Administrator Lisa Cook said the planned skijoring event has been moved back a week to Feb 22. Thirty teams are expected to compete at the RBC Fairgrounds. “They’re moving forward,” Cook said of the planning for the event.

Town staff has responded to three water leaks, a “large one” at Shaman Trail and two last week at low-income housing, Cook said.

As part of the town’s revamp of its comprehensive plan, there will be a public presentation of survey results at the Meeker library on Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. Cook said they’re pleased with the response to the surveys, with almost 400 returned. The following week, Jan. 29, there will be a vision-setting meeting, also at the library at 5:30 p.m.

Trustee Travis Day shared good news from the water flow test on the town’s new well, saying the well passed the test with 720 gallons per minute.

Speaking on behalf of the Meeker Sportsman’s Club, trustee and candidate for county commissioner Scott Nielsen said the Club’s purchase of property for a new shooting range in Lion’s Canyon is almost complete and going through the county’s planning commission process. There will be a public comment period about the new range during which citizens can share their questions and concerns.
