125 years ago

On Monday Thos. H. Iles passed through Meeker on his way to Utah, where he will purchase a large bunch of young stock and ship them in with a bunch belonging to J.L. McHatton.

A former Meeker resident, S.R. Arnold, is reported as having “done up” his son-in-law, Dr. W. Tichenor, the other day at Rifle, with a hand-saw. At last accounts the doctor was in a precarious condition.

A Ute medicine man known as Pedro was a Meeker visitor in the fore part of the week, Harry Goff being his chaperon. In the early days he used to be a jockey for the Indians when horse racing was a common occurrence.

Ranch to Lease: Thirty acres cleared, 10 with stand of alfalfa, 10 just planted in wheat and alfalfa, six plowed and read for planting. Plenty of water. Inquire of Robert Metzger, on the mesa.

New grass made a good showing during the week.

Monday’s storm delayed the incoming mail several hours; but at that, we haven’t any kick coming.

Claude Rees moved his fine herd of cattle in the direction of his ranch on the Grand river side of the divide Wednesday.

Arthur Amick and Miss Myrtle Wheeler were united in marriage by the Rev. Elston at the Methodist church parsonage last Saturday.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Grant E. Nielsen on Thursday, April 9 at Pioneers Hospital She has been named Ann Marie Nielsen, weighed 7 lbs., 5-½ oz. and measured 20-½ inches in length.

The White River Toastmasters Club is planning a dinner program for members, wives and guests. Toastmaster Ron Hilkey will make all menu arrangements for the event at the El Rancho.

John Villa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Villa of Meeker, is among the 40 outstanding Colorado high school seniors who are winners of Boettcher Foundation scholarships.

Meeker’s Tony Seely, son of Jerry and Mary Ann Seely and a member of the elite Air Force Thunderbirds precision aerial drill team, will perform at the Loveland Air Show.

In other traffic matters, the trustees approved a plan to eliminate The Big Dip at First and Main.

Collin Robinson and Sam Dare, Meeker High School freshmen and wrestling stand-outs, have been selected to wrestle on the 1995 team that will compete in France for 10 days this summer.

The Cooking Kittens met at the home of Mrs. Coy. We made submarine sandwiches. All five members were present.

Parkview Elementary students were treated to a day of fun and storytelling April 13 for Young Author’s Day.

A growing number of families in this country are choosing to educate their children at home. The Colorado Department of Education reports that over 10% of children age 7 and older are in home study. There is a great deal of controversy over the concept of home education.

A Rangely High School student will soon take part as a finalist in a pageant in Denver. Elizabeth Bailey, 17, was chosen as a finalist in the Miss America Coed Pageant.
