County, Days Gone By

Days Gone By: June 18, 2020

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago

• The agricultural department has decided that a peanut is a pea, not a nut. This is the worst roast that popular edible ever got.

• A heavy frost visited these parts on Monday and Tuesday nights, which did considerable damage to fruit trees, “garden sass” and such.

• Mercantile and other circles were surprised in the early part of this week by the announcement that L.B. Walbridge had entered the firm of A. Oldland & Co. as a partner.

• A Washington dispatch says a number of high government officials, probably including President Cleveland, will visit Meeker and the upper White river region about the last of July on a fishing and hunting expedition.

• It is the ambition of every town with any prospects or aspirations worth mentioning to possess a newspaper. The next move is to induce some confiding but ill-starred printer to fill the “long felt want” on the strength of glowing promises of ample support; and the third and last move is to see how quickly the enterprising (?) citizens of the town and county can kill off the paper that was started on the promise of support that never materialized. The last stage in the evolution of the average country newspaper is much accelerated in cases where the editor is so unwise as to hold or express an opinion on politics or anything else at variance with the preconceived opinions, ideas or prejudices of each and every one of his more less numerous subscribers and liberal (?) patrons.

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

• As yet, no fly fishing.

• See inside page for good political matter.

• Warm days and cold nights prevailed all week.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

• Now it can be told! Plans for new communities, of which Meeker was one town considered, have been delayed by the federal government due to budget constraints.

• Plans are underway for the Meeker Massacre Pageant, yearly production by people of the Meeker community as a part of the Range Call Celebration including the “Tribute to the Pioneers” Parade and two Range Call rodeos.

• Here it is another summer season for the Rio Blanco Ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jordan began their 34th year managing the picturesque guest ranch.

The Meeker Herald25 years ago

• Several senior citizens from Rangely’s Radino Senior Center came to the Rio Blanco County Commissioners’ meeting June 19 to protest the no-smoking ban at the center.

• From Meeker’s perspective, the Ride the Rockies bicycle tour that swept through town June 19 was a huge success.

• Meeker will soon have a four-way stop sign, complete with a flashing red light, at the intersection of Sixth and Main.

• Meeker Police Chief Si Woodruff did indeed kill a llama with his service pistol a week ago. The hapless critter apparently escaped from its normal pasture and bedded down unseen behind the target at the Meeker Sportsmans Club firing range. “I feel terrible about it,” Woodruff, an enthusiastic lion hunter, says.

Rangely Times 50 years ago

• We owe a great deal of thanks to Congressman Wayne Aspinall and Senator Gordon Allott for their efforts on behalf of Rangely in getting a new Post Office approved.

Rangely Times 25 years ago

• The White River Land Users hosted a potluck supper for their June 19 meeting with the Rio Blanco County Commissioners and Rep. Russell George.

• Mary Lansing, a local educator, has been chosen by the Rangely Board of Education as the new principal for Parkview Elementary School.
