Ordinary people like us who have families and bills would be locked out of elected office because we couldn’t afford to serve, while those who could easily afford to forego a salary could dive right in to pursue their own interests. The permanent aristocracy that the Anti-Federalists warned us of, and which we have endured for generations, would become even more firmly entrenched.
