  • The other day, a telegram was sent to Meeker from President Cleveland. It read, “We have 500 cowpunchers, ready at your call, for a fight with the ‘cigarettos.’ Reserve the right to furnish our own horses and grub. Signed, Dwight Edwin Ryland, president, and Harry French, secretary.”
  • Travel has noticeably been on the increase.
  • Cattlemen are very interested in exterminating the prairie dogs.

  • E. J. Wilson set out for lower Piceance Creek to test the oil shale which is producing an abundance of oil.
  • A call for a local bakery is in motion. The county sends lots of wheat to Grand Junction and the Denver area and stores in Meeker are importing bread. A local bakery would solve these dilemmas.
  • Thieves broke into the Oldland store last Saturday, stealing items worth anywhere from $50 to $100.

  • The Meeker Fire Department celebrated their 38th Anniversary this week. They celebrated with a dinner at Elbert Hall.
  • The Herald received calls from the Denver area after last week’s edition of the Rocky Mountain News. The calls were about ways to help the money of the Freeman Fairfield money get spent.
  • The Colorado Game, Fish and Parks commission passed a new regulation that would prohibit any other personal besides law enforcement acting in the line of duty to discharge a firearm or release an arrow, intended to kill wildlife, 100 yards on each side of any public road.

  • The Meeker Board of Education voted 5-2 to return back to a five-day school week. Feedback from the community about the decision was apparent.
  • The Meeker Rec Center was awarded a GOCO grant for a new lightning system on the ballfield.
  • The season came to an end last week for Meeker’s “Bowling Brats.” All participants came home with many trophies.

  • The retail sales of Rangely increased 10.5% in the fourth quarter of 1970.
  • In May, two vacancies on the Rangely College governing board will be filled at an election.
  • During the last part of March, the FAA will be administering flight instructor written examinations at Rangely College.

  • The Rangely Development Agency discussed different project bids at their regular meeting. The paving quote for Kenney Marina ended up being much higher than expected, totaling out at $65,683.
  • Rio Blanco County Commissioners accepted a $64,960 bid from Mesa Mack for a 1977 model Mack truck. They also accepted a $22,851 bid for a bottom dump trailer from Transwest Trailer Sales.
  • The Board of Trustees discussed the property surplus and funding for a sampling program at their regular meeting.
